The Far Green Country (2018) Reviews

  • It's beautifully shot. The storytelling is insulting.

The film is an expertly shot home movie of an extended family vacation that most of us wish that we could take, accompanied by narration that is whiny, entitled and self-aggrandizing. It lost me when Kelly quoted "The Man in the Arena" by Teddy Roosevelt to allude to what she is doing with her family. Running away due to the inability to be still and alone with one's self is not being in the arena. They rent out the beautiful home on a large property that they own (which they can return to at any time, like if it gets too cold to live in the Bounder). They stay with friends frequently who are lucky enough to get to share in the adventures and trials of the travelling family. Many have to return to work 6-8 weeks after having a rough labor and challenges. Many of us dream about living this sort of life after paying our dues and hopefully having the opportunity to retire comfortably. What this family had and continues to have is an opportunity of a lifetime. Watching them complain about it, profit from it, while putting down "average" people who don't endeavor to "live intentionally", is annoying. Being able to go home any time with nothing lost is not risking anything. If most people did what they did in this movie, they'd be risking losing everything and may not be able to recover.

  • Pseudo struggles -nothing felt authentic

    The_Boxing_Cat2019-04-16

I expected this film to be about a family with real struggles. It turned out to be a story about a couple of privileged people who are completely out of touch with the real world. The only problem they seem to have is not being able to understand that they don't have any problems- just the made up kind. The over rehearsed narration by the bored housewife (with her gross sense of entitlement) was like fingernails on a chalkboard. She should stop craving pity and learn the meaning behind all those famous quotes that she tossed out. The highlights were the stunning cinematography, amazing soundtrack and their adorable three year old. Most of the reviews here sound fake too...like they were written by the same person.

  • Nothing To Write Home About

    VanBooter2019-03-27

This documentary is pretty disappointing. As a campervan owner and someone who spends a few months a year in the van I was looking forward to watching this. Well the film is neither one thing or the other and nothing special or different you won't be able to watch on youtube. Actually to be honest I have found better and more in depth films on YT to full time living. Films about boondocking, the costings, the problems, ways to make a living, cooking, heating, etc, etc. Sadly this doc is aimed at the more personal side of things and spends more time dedicated to themselves and their child. Saying that the quality of the camera work is good, but would I recommend you watch it, no not really but if you really must then try a Google search, although apparently it's also on Amazon prime.

  • Reality or fantasy?

    jobrien-250222019-06-03

It's a visual and aural feast and an interesting narrative. But does it paint a realistic picture of getting away from it all in a 1997 Bounder and healing an ailing marriage? Probably not. Owing a home but leaving it to find yourself in a motor home is not as easy and carefree as the actors/director/producers convey for several reasons. Who pays for the upkeep of the rented home and monitors the renters? Who makes the mortgage payments? There are still utilities, property taxes and insurances to pay. Once in the motor home, how is the coach serviced? New motor homes can be a sinkhole of expenses but a 20-year-old coach can mean more time on the side of the road than on the road. (I owned a 1997 Bounder purchased new.) Motor homes require insurance, licensing and frequent fuel stops to keep rolling. At about 8 miles per gallon (that's downhill with a tail wind), the expense of gasoline in a puller like this can be overwhelming for a couple who ostensibly had to pool their resources together to pay just $15,000 for the coach. And without a tow car, all grocery shopping and Laundromat visits mean finding a parking lot nearby to accommodate a 32-foot rig in tight spaces, which is never easy. And what about camp fees? State and national parks are not free ($25-50 a night plus reservation fee) and advance booking is necessary to find a spot to moor. This couple never seemed to have a problem with any of these daily concerns. This gave them a great deal of time to home-school their 3-year-old son and work on their marriage from an open sofa in the Bounder. (I hope the back bed was secured in open position when their son was sleeping in the storage space underneath!) Not very believable. I've motor homed for 22 years and it never worked this way at all. For example, how did they pay their bills and take care of their banking needs? With that small Dometic fridge, there is not very much room to store food, in spite of those trips to Costco (which must have cost $300+ each). And, yes, when you are driving and hear a squeal from the generator, you wonder why the generator was on during travel in cold climes. You use it for the AC. And generators usually don't squeal. They turn on and work or they do not. Heating the bays with an external furnace to prevent the black tank from freezing? Our 97 Bounder had that feature built in already with the propane furnace already. (Price of propane? About $3.50 a gallon and it's hard to find.) The narrative is delightful but pure fantasy. I suspect the visits with six marriage counselors and ample financial resources is what saved the marriage, not all those miles on the road and self-serving introspections. Stay home and just do it. Use the Bounder for a 2-3 week vacation once a year, which is the luxury most folks get to enjoy. But I loved the cinematography, though, and clever use of drones to capture the journey. It is definitely a good watch if you take the monologues as pure wishful thinking and fantasy.

  • TERRIBLE LIFE FOR A CHILD

    krnmrcl2019-04-23

This movie was made all because a woman " can't stay in one place for long periods of time." She does not care that she is putting her husband through hell, and providing an unstable life for her child. Sure, when things get tough and things break down, who is the one that gets stuck fixing everything, yep the husband, who would rather not be living on the road in the first place. She claims she is a "free spirit" but all the problems they encounter on the road it's up to the husband to fix. If I were him I'd leave the witch and let her go by herself and handle every stinking problem that comes up. I bet she'd change her mind in a New York minute about claiming to be a free spirit and not being able to stay in one place very long. When you do that you may actually have to deal with your depression or your troubled marriage or whatever hell else she is running from.
