  • A Major Let Down

I don't know where to begin with this flick. Maybe here: Soldiers who don't at all act & move like trained soldiers, female soldiers with make-up on while in combat, some third rate CGI effects that I could do on my PC in fifteen minutes, and enough plot-holes and unexplained crap to lose count of fairly fast. In fairness, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bill Mosely made the film ALMOST watchable. But those two alone couldn't save the horrid storyline, and the above-mentioned things. I tried very hard to get past some of the issues that I found with this film, but it was to no avail. After 48 minutes I found myself being thankful that I was more than half way into the film. I thought years ago (in the 80's) that low-end horror flicks couldn't get any more lame, but was DEAD WRONG. It is sad to see someone as talented as the Oscar winning Cuba Gooding taking roles in such ridiculous movies. I hope that his appearance in this one didn't ruin his career long-term. -JB

  • They tried. . .but it failed for lack of coherence & suspense.

I read through a bunch of the other reviews-- but then decided to give it a try and an open mind. Alas. . .the other reviewers are right. HOWEVER. . . IF you have NEVER seen "Prince of Darkness" and you and your Girlfriend just want something lite and a little gory for a Saturday Night Horror flick-- This DOES qualify as a passable thriller rental pick. If that's all you want-- READ NO FURTHER. Put the DVD in the player and enjoy. Fried Chicken and Pop goes nicely with this. And the Girlfriend can talk all she wants. To you. To her Cellphone. To her Mom. . .it doesn't matter. BUT IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS CRITIC OF THE RELIGIOUS HORROR SUB-GENRE on the other hand. . .Read On-- First-- the Title of the Movies tells you ALL you need to know- so there's no suspense in finding out what it's all about. Two-- Lack of consistency. A military extraction team such as was portrayed here was so in-effective, so undisciplined, so un-cohesive as to make a drill sergeant scream with shame and anguish. By the time the Asian gal went chasing after the little girl in the white dress --AGAIN!-- I threw my hands up in disgust. They might as well have someone chase a cat into a dark room and crouch down and go: "Here, kitty-kitty-kitty!" Three-- Location and Setup inconsistency. If this was a deep ARCHAEOLOGICAL excavation somewhere in a Desert-- why would someone build an entire REFINERY FACTORY half a mile UNDERGROUND? Four-- By the time you start pulling together the priests, the zombies, the devil in the Ice and the periodic blathering of scripture, that was a sideshow to the idiotic one by one luring off of the mission team members to be seduced and stabbed and vomited on. By this time, it long stopped being suspenseful. Instead, you are sitting there going "Yeah-yeah-yeah, just get on it with it!" Five-- Mack's Past Flashbacks became meaningless and wasted. Six-- This movie was a rip off of "Prince of Darkness". And "Prince of Darkness" did it better. WAY better. By the first 20 minutes, I was hoping that this movie would be an attempt to take the "Prince of Darkness" concept to a new level, just on the military side-- but they stumbled off into the proverbial dark. Fact is-- today-- if you're going to try and render the story of the Battle of Heaven and Fallen Angels in a modern, non-religious plot-- you must have a savvy, coherent, intelligent script that can mix in SERIOUS theology, historical bits and science together into something the viewer can see as plausible. Because this is one of those topics that really shouldn't be done unless you're willing to do it WELL.

  • Worse than expected!

Watch out guys - the review saying this movie is "surprisingly" good - is being sarcastic! - it's actually pretty dead on if you're in on the joke - maybe I'm just slow, but I did not get it - and now it's too late - I've wasted my time on this pile of s...! I guess a movie titled " The Devil's Tomb" is never gonna be Oscar material, but I still expected some kind of dumb entertainment of some sort - but what a letdown! Only fun to be had is trying to keep track of all the dumb moves this crew of "elite" soldiers pull off. It's truly a special team Cuba Gooding has managed to form here - there's a rookie on board too - everyone makes fun of him - but he might just be the wisest of the bunch. Speaking bout rookie stuff - this movie is just so poorly made that it's impossible to get into on any kind of level! What I'm trying to say is: whatever You do - DON'T waste your time on this one!

This movie was terrible and it's a real shame because the cast is good. The main problem was the script that had no character development at all. The first 10 minutes of the film are really slow and nothing is added to the story. All we see is a supposed elite military force acting like children and insulting each other and moaning about the mission. If they had spent this time introducing the characters and their relationships with each other then I might have maybe cared a little about what happens to them. I get the feeling the writer of this movie had recently seen Event Horizon, Doom and Mutant Chronicles and basically copied any ideas that this movie does have from there, this film isn't as good as any of them though. The annoying flashbacks that occur regularly for Cuba Gooding Jr. character are badly portrayed and fail at explaining the relationship between Cuba and Ray Winstone. The Military unit act completely unprofessionally and don't watch each others backs at all and keep wondering off alone. It is like they have received no military training at all. The intent and abilities of the 'ancient evil' is barely even touched on and left me very underwhelmed. This movie isn't at all scary and has no shocks or plot twists. I could go on all day about the plot wholes and bad script. It was just such a shame that they wasted a good cast on such a bad script. Avoid this movie and watch Event Horizon instead.

To have such an actor as Cuba G in this type and caliber of movie should be insulting. I can understand wanting to break the stereotype of characters he is prone too but this part in this movie is a HUGE leap in the wrong direction. A once A-List actor turned to terrible class B horror? This movie was by far a waist of 90 minutes of my life that I surely will never get back. The lines were typical, the action over played and the only glimmer of promise came from a semi-unique story line that fails to provide the depth one might look for in a movie. My rating is poor at best. I can only hope that the rest of the cast find better work, even if its in the food service industry.
