Reach (2018) Reviews

  • A noble attempt for a C-grade indie film

    TheTopDawgCritic2018-10-24

This film has an identity crisis with its convoluted writing and screenplay that took away from the films message. The pace was too slow and that awful unbearable score made it more evident. Considering there were 3 novice writers, you'd think at least one of them would have fine-tuned the screenplay. The acting was mainly sub-par/amateurish with the exception of Johnny James Fiore, who was adequate. Others were stale or ridiculously overboard. Leif Rokesh directed this film fairly decent considering it's his first notch in film making, but he would have shined if the editing was better. Granted, this was a low budget indie film, but I feel it could have been much better with a little fine tuning and getting rid of that awful score and soundtrack to elevate it from being bland, into having some or little life. Nevertheless, still a noble attempt for a C-grade indie film. 6/10 from me

This movie is so inspiring the way it contributes to things that still be happening today like bullying I just love it good job Garrett Clayton ????????????

  • Melodramatic hype and unsympathetic characters

Parents need to know that Reach is a teen drama about bullying, suicide, affairs, and abuse. It is not however suitable for teens as the positive messages in it are too murky to be coherent or valuable. It portrays teen substance use (including drinking, smoking pot, and vaping), physical abuse, and characters actively contemplating suicide or planning to hurt others. It is melodramatic and predictable in a muddled sort of way. It would encourage no conversation between parents and teens that I would see as useful but if you like disturbed crying teens with twisted psyches that end up shooting people it might be the movie for you.

  • HATED IT! Worst movie ever made!!!

    sephula-092372019-02-16

The following are my watch notes (written down as I was watching the film in progress): Acting sucks. Cast is mid-20s, not mid-teens, and all seem disingenuous. Drama teacher too camp, and had to grow a beard just to appear older than the other cast members, even though they are really the same age. All gay cast makes it feel like an alternate universe. Also, boy band? In what alternate universe? Not relatable, at all. Whole movie seems made by a high school student. Soundtrack sucks like they used auto-tune. There are multiple logical errors, like how they are all in the same drama class together, but one is only 14 turning 15, while another is driving a muscle car? It's the cheap all-gay rip off of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". Shamelessly glorifies drug abuse. The classic "My parents forgot my birthday"? OK LAME!!! Now, it's ripping off "Sixteen Candles", too!!! What a joke!!! It has to hit every cliche, and every stereotype there is. All this "I'm the victim" crap just for the sake of drama. It's even worse than a Lifetime movie. OH NO!! Now, it's ripping off "Say Anything"? I'm done! This movie SUCKS!!! It's like it's mocking you for being stupid enough to watch it. Honestly, the worst movie I have ever seen, and I usually like low budget LGBT movies. OH!!! But, NOT this one! This is garbage!!! How did this movie ever get published? It feels like it's being bad on purpose for the sake of poking fun at people for watching it! I'd almost say it's anti-gay, if not for the obviously gay cast. At the end, the timeline just starting jumping around erratically. OH! Here we go! And, now we learn that one of the characters is named "Jack Yahoff"? Now, it really IS throwing insults at the viewer. OMG! What a lame ending. You've got to be kidding me! I'm ashamed as a gay man, for all the gay people involved in the making of this piece of trash. Stupidity like this gives us gays a bad name. I want to go back in the closet out of shame for my people, after watching this. This movie could make a person want to commit suicide for real out of shame. It shouldn't be allowed to exist. Please, don't think all gays are like this. And, please seek help if you are feeling self-destructive.
