  • Refusing to Acknowledge the Existence of Evil Perpetuates It

    trista-902-4317422017-04-01

I got a familiar cold, hard and sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach watching this documentary. I recognized it immediately, even though I hadn't felt that particular dread for decades. It was the old anxiety and fear that I used to go through on almost a daily basis for several years of my life growing up in small towns. Part of the power of this film is that if you are or were a bullying victim, you can immediately identify with the all the anguish on the screen. The fact that there were no reviews of this movie posted here even though it has a decent rating mirrors exactly how this sort of abuse thrives. People don't speak out. They see, but don't say anything. This is a gut wrenching documentary about the evil that is allowed to run rampant in a city that is wrongfully touted as one of the best places to live in America. It is disgusting to know that there were no repercussions for all the people involved who failed these children on every level. I highly recommend this film for everyone. Not just kids or parents or educators/administrators. Communities are responsible for what flourishes within them, not individuals.

  • Powerful film about a very weak place

    lawrenceb562019-04-04

Having been a teacher at a school that knew how to handle Bullying and bullies, this film horrified and angered me. If you call it one sided then note that not one person from the school or the superintendent s office dared to show their cowardly mugs on camera to defend their actions or their appalling lack of action, though they were clearly given the opportunity. That reeks of cowardice and this schools mascot should be replaced with an ostrich. They were given about a hundred chances to help these two children. I know that not everyone who lives in this town could possibly be as pathetically cruel as some of the Mentor students or as callous and weak as so many of the Mentor teachers and admin. But why couldn't they stand and fight for a child? You're making so much money as a teacher, coach or counselor that you can't reach down and find some semblance of personal strength if character? That's a question they can take with them through many long nights.
