Brooklyn Breach (2012) Reviews

  • Fascinating Debut Feature...A Must See!

I really enjoyed viewing Brooklyn Breach at the NewFilmmakers series in February. Real cool concept: Big Pharma use of surveillance cams employed to test new anti-depressant drug on unknowing test family subjects. I've never seen a film with this visual style. Very avant garde use of multiple split screens mimicking the multi-surveillance cameras in the smoke alarm, TV, phones, etc. Maybe not for everyone, took time to get used to schema, but after the first 15mins, my friends and I were hooked. The ending is extremely powerful and tragic. The filmmaker, Benjamin Orifici, put on a many hats, directing, writing, filming, editing...and even was the company's surveillance man, Dr. Cervelli, who monitored and later on, attempts to intervene in experiments gone wrong. He answered qs at the screening...I look forward to viewing his upcoming feature, Carroll park. Def. a director with checking out!

  • Refreshingly original drama

    aelroy2013-02-19

A dark suspense drama. The story weaves the lives of 3 couples with the backdrop of privacy violation issues in a consumer society driven by powerful corporations. A unique commentary about how our lives can so easily become the drama on someone else screen. The cinematic language is innovative and involves the audience in a voyeuristic framework, turning the principle of reality TV inward on itself. The story unfolds before our eyes in the form of surveillance feeds, but in a fashion that works with the story, rather than appearing as a gimmick. Artfully done. A first of an aspiring filmmaker to watch!

  • Wonderful Indie Feature!

I saw Brooklyn Breach last night and was captivated by both the intriguing storyline, inventive use of split-screens and the excellent acting--especially the Sadia & Jonathan characters. I especially liked the inventive twist on the surveillance concept, as we watch the characters through their TV cameras, outdoor surveillance cameras and cellphones. The ending was intense! It is amazing what the director was able to achieve on such a modest budget. He was at the screening to answer questions and was very forthright in his assessment of the future of indie features. I hope Brooklyn Breach will make it to Netflix so I can show it to my boyfriend! - Susan P.
