Alien: Covenant - Prologue: The Crossing (2017) Reviews

  • Should have made it in the final film

Prologue: The Crossing shows us what happened right after Prometheus and expands a little on the Engineers and David. Having watched it AFTER Covenant the other day, I strongly believe it should have been made a part of it, not a separate online release. You'll understand why after you see Covenant for yourself. If you're an Alien fan then this little short will add more cohesion and structure to the narrative so definitely watch it BEFORE seeing Covenant, as well as Prologue: Last Supper. Also, check out this Alien/Predator time-line to better understand the order of events in what seems to start looking like a little big mess: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls003104998/

  • Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Having watched Alien: Covenant and feeling rather disappointed with it (for various reasons, especially the poor decision-making of the characters), I was glad that a bit of subsequent research revealed this clip on YouTube. I initially agreed with the other reviewers that it should have been part of the movie, but now I'm less sure. The extra effort of looking around for further information resulted in a sweet little reward, and I'm assuming that others have had similar sentiments. Why should a movie experience rely on an effortless spoon-fed supply that is so easily forgotten if being forced to make a bit of an effort results in viewers getting rather more out of it in return? Anyway, The Crossing is beautifully shot and composed, the atmosphere dark and foreboding. The clip provides various bits of information that link Prometheus and Covenant. As in both films, Fassbender is magnificent. The aesthetics of the arrival scene are incredible, and the godlike presence assumed by David could not be better emphasised than the lines from Percy Shelley's Ozymandias. Wish it were longer :) 9/10

  • Incredible...

This prologue is exhilarating and makes you feel sad at the same time. Why? Because one can not help but think about the incredible story that could have been if Alien Covenant would have followed this path. This begins right where Prometheus ended. David and Shaw are traveling, alone... on their way to the Engineers home world. It is such a delight to see Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender together again... what a great chemistry! Their relationship is complex, yet its nuances really shine on screen. Everything about this short story is beautiful and grandiose. I hope to see more of David and Shaw, I hope we will discover what really happened between these two. I think it should be made in another movie, we could have flashbacks of what happened somehow... "Look on my works ye mighty... And despair!"

"Alien: Covenant - Prologue: The Crossing" is a really short live action movie that runs for under three minutes only. It was written and directed by Ridley Scott and came out this year (2017), actually roughly a month ago, and is supposed to serve as an appetizer for the newest Alien movie. Apparently, it takes place between "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" and Fassbender and Rapace reprise their roles in here, which is nothing too special though as it is basically only one scene and then it is over already. NNothing to shine in terms of acting or writing. Perhaps the visual side is once again okay, even if I still find it unusual to see Fassbinder with this bright blonde hair. Maybe it's just me. Overall, like I wrote in the title of my review you can check it out if you love the franchise or the actors, but honestly you won't be missing much if you decide to skip it. Then again at 150 seconds roughly you cannot do much wrong can you? I give it a thumbs-down though. It's really nothing too special and certainly not a must-see for any reason.
